EQ vs. IQ

Intelligence Quotient has long been a standard measurement for human intelligence. In recent years, however, social scientists and behavioral researchers have introduced a new phase: “Emotional Quotient.” It might not be as precise a measuring as IQ but EQ certainly describes the factual reason that high intelligence is not the final word on success and happiness in life.
The two are not opposite or mutually exclusive. As one author puts it, “While IQ defines how smart you are, EQ defines how well you use what smarts you have.” One hopes that people would have generous amount of both intellectual capability and emotional maturity.
According to a famous author, there are five components of a healthy EQ- self-awareness, motivation, self-regulation, empathy and social skills.
Self-awareness. The first rule to acquire wisdom, so says Socrates, is to know yourself. Each of us is created by God with a unique ad special personality. Each of us has been differently shaped by people and circumstances around us. We all have different strengths and weaknesses. The more knowledgeable we are about, the more we can learn to at peace with who we are to harness our gifts and talents, and to be vigilant on the dark sides.
Motivation. Call it “drive” “enthusiasm” or “zeal.”  This quality allows us to keep on doing even the most humdrum jobs. That’s because the external circumstances do not have to determine our internal response. A tired mother can still love her noisy children. A bored office worker can still perform a first-class job. A student, nervous about the coming exams can decide to do his best –and let God handle the rest. In all these examples, it’s not just what’s inside that counts but also “what’s at the end,” the goal of all our striving.
Self-regulation. This is a spanking new term for an old idea-self-control. Consider the opposite: to be out-of-control. The man who cannot handle his temper of the woman who cannot control her tongue ends up negatively affecting people. Self-regulation is also our jazzed-up term for a few other old ideas: temperance and moderation.
Empathy. This word literally means “to suffer with.” It’s easy to see why empathy (or compassion) is such a necessary commodity if we are to live well with other people. In terms of succeeding in our careers of getting ahead in life, this quality enables us to treat others as persons, not as machines who don’t get hurt. The empathetic person is sensitive to other people’s emotions; he puts himself “in their shoes” and therefore relates with them and reaches out to them in the most caring way.
Social skills. This refers to the general ability to get along with others. The goal is not necessarily to be a life of the party or the most popular person around. Life is full of relationships; family, friends, neighbors and those at work. It’s the ability to express love as if fits the relationship or the circumstances.
It is a symptom in our world that “giftedness” is considered more important than “character,” or that IQ is taken more seriously than EQ. But while it’s true that giftedness and intelligence might bring a person far initially, it is rather character and emotional maturity which will bring long-term happiness and success to a person. Always remember that “IQ gets you hired but EQ gets you PROMOTED!”

How to Prevent Dengue

A female mosquito of the Culicidae family (Cul...Image via Wikipedia

Dengue Haemorrhagic Fever, known as dengue alone, is said as one of the lethal health problem in East Asia, Middle East, and Central America and Caribbean areas. DHF is a severe form of viral disease that is transmitted with Aedes Aegypti female mosquito. One mosquito bite can inflict the disease. This strand of mosquito sucks blood at day light and when the lights are about to depart.

With the bite of the mosquito can spread the virus while sucking blood with a human. Virus can circulate to the blood within a couple days and can have circulatory and liver problem. This is a severe illness that affects mostly children and even adults with less immune system. The virus is not contagious and cannot be spread directly with person having dengue.

Certain symptoms of fever are fever, headache, nausea and vomiting, muscle pain, skin rashes.  Illness is often also known with the sudden rise and fall of the temperature and the patient has difficulty in breathing. It can cause also abdominal pain, hemorrhage, and nose bleeding for critical cases. Persons exhibiting signs of bleeding need to seek medical attention right away. It takes time to recover from dengue and sometimes it can lead to death.

Patients need to be closely monitored in the few days to examine any reaction. Over-the-counter drugs and analgesic is not a guarantee for this infection though it can rip off the fever but the viral infection. This viral infection can complicate any other illness like pneumonia. You can go to hospital to require oxygen support and anti-inflammatory medications. It would take a week for the patient to stay in the hospital. For severe cases, a blood transfusion is needed to control the bleeding since the patience is in shock and loss blood. Taking of fluids is needed to prevent dehydration. Doctors check also the blood count of the patient to see if there are enough white blood corpuscles to fight the virus.

There is no vaccine available yet to prevent dengue. The best preventive measure is to eliminate the places where the mosquitoes lay their eggs. It flourishes in clean, stagnant water like flower vases, tires, gutter, bottles, barrels and other container or place in your backyard. These serve as artificial breeding ground for them. Proper waste disposal is best recommendation to avoid dengue. Cover containers properly or if possible get rid of them.

Sleeping with mosquito net and wearing long clothes are advisable also. Mosquito repellent is needed if for your protection. Application of appropriate insecticides and sprays are required to eliminate the spread of the mosquito in household area and even at school.

Effects of Pollution in our BODY

Overview of main health effects on humans from...Image via Wikipedia

Air Pollution
The causes of air pollution can result from natural forces or from modern living. There are four main gases: nitrogen, oxygen, argon and carbon dioxide. The urban air has an excess of carbon dioxide plus sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxide, ozone, and a group of compound called hydrocarbons. Present in these gases are lead, mercury and particulate. Particulates are small particles or liquid droplets that are suspended in air, including fumes, smoke, and dust. Burning of fossils fuels by cars and factories are the causes of air pollution. Air pollution produce air pollutants, which forms a thick, visible haze called smog. Under normal weather conditions, this haze rises toward the cooler air in the upper atmosphere where it diffuses. This condition may affect people such as eye burn and tears, irritates the throat, and can cause coughing or breathing difficulty. It will also promote the development of a wide range of respiratory and other health problems, such like asthma, emphysema, and bronchitis. To the people who have existing heart and lung ailments, pollution can be life threatening. Other ill effect of air pollution is the production of acid that may destroy the normal acid balance of the water and soil, and kills water plants and animals, as well as fishes and birds.
Water Pollution
Improper dumping of human wastes and phosphate detergents has created water pollution problem. Phosphates and high levels of chemicals in water produce toxic chemicals, which promotes rapid growth of bacteria and algae. This will deplete the normal oxygen causing eutrophication, or aging resulting to chocking of water plans, fishes, and other living organisms. Water pollution leads to contamination of food supply, such as the use of pesticides containing PCBs and Dioxin. These chemical elements cause cancer to humans.
Radiation
Low level of radiation is not harmful to human health, such as non-ionizing radiation in microwaves and x-ray. Other radioactive substance in the earth like uranium and radium causes radiation. Radiation from the sun can be harmful if the heat is too intense. However, all these can be damaging to human health if exposed to high levels of radiation, which will injure the cells and cause genetic damage. Pregnant women are not allowed to undergo any x-ray for it is harmful to the mother and the child’s health. It may cause deformities, fever, miscarriage and death.
Solid Waste
Solid wastes are the most hazardous and problematic environmental condition. Most dumping sites are open spaces used as breeding grounds for rats, flies, and other disease carries. Improper burning of solid waste can increase air pollution. Common diseases causes by improper solid waste management are diarrhea, malaria, pneumonia, skin disease, and other viral infections.

A chimpanzee brain at the Science Museum LondonImage via Wikipedia

The theory behind the positive value of being in contact with nature is that our nervous system and genetic structure are turned into a natural environment such as that relaxation occurs when you are in contact with nature.

The family is the most influential factor for mental disorder- for example, the way your parents teach you how to cope with problems or how you can express your emotions. Other factors in the environment that will affect mental health are noise, pollution, uncomfortable temperature, and inadequate sleep. These factors may affect your performance in school or at the place of work.

For example, brain tumors, injuries, strokes, or syphilis can affect brain function. The condition that affects brain is called physical illness. A lack of oxygen in the brain can destroy the brain cells which cannot be repaired. Cigarette smoking, alcohol, and drugs affect brain function. Prolong use of these substances may destroy mental health, causing mental disorder.

People who would like to sustain a healthy personality seek professional help for them to overcome their emotional problems. The recognition of an emotional problem shows a person is willing to do something to cope with the emotional problems affecting his mental health.
Positive behavior is desirable in order to eliminate negative thoughts and feeling. Negative feeling and actions are poisonous to human well-being. Attitude and feeling can consciously cause changes in behavior. Keeping hostilities, resentments, and an attitude of revenge will have a harmful effect on mental health.
People with mental health know how to learn to relax. It can contribute to a state of happiness and well-being. Engaging oneself in physical exercise can release tension and anxieties. It is also good for the heart, blood circulation, and oxygen consumption.

Common Colds

coldImage by flyzipper via Flickr

Common Colds
The lungs are susceptible to different kinds of diseases. This may be due to exposure to the external environment. It may also be due to the spread of the disease from other parts of the body.
Each lung has a large surface area making it susceptible to many airborne diseases. However, the tissues of the lungs are, by nature, very resistant to diseases. It is only when the person is physically weak that respiratory ailment affect the lungs. Some common respiratory diseases may involve the lungs and/or the other respiratory organs located above the lungs.
Twenty-five percent of the ailments reported to doctors are upper respiratory disorders. This is because the air inhaled may carry not only air but also dirt, dust, particulates, viruses, and bacteria. The impurities are deposited in the upper respiratory system, they infect the respiratory tract.
Common Colds
The common cold or acute coryza is an infection of the upper respiratory tract. It can be caused by any one of more than 200 viruses. When the infection occurs, the walls of the respiratory tract swell and produce excess mucus. It thus gives rise to the typical cold symptoms of stuffy or runny nose, throat discomfort, malaise, and occasional coughing.
Colds can produces fevers of up to 39C or 102F in infants and children. Such fevers in adults indicate that the infection is probably influenza. Most colds run their course in three to ten days, but infants and elderly persons are susceptible to complications such as sinusitis, ear inflammations, and pneumonia.
All cold viruses are spread by direct contact or by airborne particles. They become seasonally epidemic.
Preventive Measures and Treatment
Because of the number of viruses involved, people do not develop immunity to colds as they do too many other viral diseases. Vaccines are of little use in prevention because so many kinds of viruses are involved. To prevent catching colds, avoid crowded places and people who have colds. At the onset of colds, a quick and very hot bath can stop colds.
Colds are treated with rest and fluids such as fruit juices and water. In addition, medication such as antihistamines, decongestants, and cough medicines may also be prescribes. Some people with colds also eat whole fresh lemon and raw or half cooked onions to treat their colds. Aspirin is recommended only when symptoms are severe. Indiscriminate taking of aspirin increases viral shedding and makes the disease more contagious.
In case of high fever, apply cold compress on the forehead and/or quick sponge bath. Paracetamol is also used to bring down the temperature. However, if fever persists, call for professional medical help.
